BSS Examinations

Most of the waterways of Britain require boats to have insurance, a licence and a valid BSS Certificate in place. This requirement includes craft using most of the rivers, lakes and canals of the UK's inland waterway network.

All powered craft, or vessels with an electrical, gas, or heating system require a BSS Examination every four years.

Contact me if you require a BSS Examination carried out.

Boat Safety Certificates

Andy can provide a boat safety certificate for all privately owned or shared vessels including cruisers, narrow boats, widebeam boats and Dutch barges guaranteeing your vessel's compliance with the boat safety scheme

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you need to see?

In order for the examination to take place I will need full access to all areas of the boat including the engine bay

How long does the examination take?

1 & 1/2 to 2 hours subject to onboard systems

Do I get a certificate immediately if my boat passes?

No, all certificates and examination reports are issued electronically or in paper form within 48 hours

What is included in the gas test

All appliances connected to the gas system must be working correctly (I.E all burners must be working on a hob)

My engine isn’t working at the moment - does that mean my boat will fail?

Your engine doesn’t need to be working at the time of inspection. I will only be checking the cables and fuel lines.

How do I check my fire extinguishers are okay?

The gauge must be in the green and it must have a BSi or equivalent marking

How many fire extinguishers do I need?

It depends on your boat! Give me a call - I’m happy to talk through what you will need

My BSS expires in 3 months time - how soon can I book my new examination?

Within 2 months of your expiry date

What happens if my boat fails?

You have 3 months from the examination to rectify any non compliant issues

Do you charge for a re-examination

There is 1 re-examination included in your fee providing it is within 3 months.

What does an examination cost?

Between £200-£270 depending on boat and your location. This includes the examination, CRT fees and a 2nd visit if required

Do you do a discount if I have more than 1 boat in the same location?

I am happy to give a discount on a block booking of 2 or more boats in the same location on the same day. Please call me to discuss

Do I need smoke alarms on my boat?

On a privately owned vessel, smoke alarms are not a BSS requirement as yet - but they are a good idea! CO2 alarms are a requirement on all vessels with accommodation space.

My boat is my MAIN RESIDENCE and I DONT have a bubble tester fitted - do I need a Gas Safe Examiner?

Yes you do! I have a gas safe engineer who can attend with me in certain locations, call me for info

I use my boat for LEISURE PURPOSES only - do I need a gas safe engineer to do my BSS?

No! I can examine your boat - give me a call to book in.
